KAMAUU Is The Quiet Warrior Making Otherworldly Music

A candid conversation with the Brooklyn based artist, KAMAUU, during his first trip to Kenya.

"Would you like some tea?" he offers as we sit at a hotel in Nairobi's plush Westlands district. After delivering an electrifying performance at Thrift Social on Saturday night, KAMAUU is surprisingly uneager to take part in any tourist activities while he's here.

"I'm still in transit, going from place to place. It's like a huge amount of processing that's happening right now. I'm not a tourist here, this is my house," he says.

It seems only right for him to begin his African experience in Kenya,

From his visually striking videos to his textured production and thought-provoking lyricism, the Washington, D.C.-bred, Brooklyn-based MC and singer has cultivated a unique and relevant perspective that’s woven into every measure of his music. In advance of his recent mixtape, TheKAMAUU-CASSETTE: ŭRTH GōLD, KAMAUU sat down with TIDAL to talk about the project and the intention behind the narratives he explores.

So he hides his eyes when he performs.

KAMAUU is a singer/songwriter from Washington, D.C. Now living in Brooklyn, he's the focus in our latest episode of "Song and Story."

The Daily News is going behind the lyrics with a new video series, "Song and Story," that explores the craft of songwriting.

KAMAUU became interested in music at an early age and drew inspiration from his surrounding — from his mother's singing, to the music from around the world that his father would play.

He discusses his song, "LăVĭNDəR," which he performed with
